Words for Courageous Living

The True Peace Provided

In 1873 there was a terrible fire in the city of Chicago, Ill. USA. A man lost all his material possessions. It seems that this did not affect him much because as a Christian he had "set his affections on things above."

But later his wife and children were on board the "Ville du Havre" to visit France and their ship was rammed by an English vessel. Within two hours the ship went down along with its 226 people. His wife did survive, but his 4 children died.

When he was enroute to England to meet his wife and children, he was given the tragic news and later was shown the spot in the mid-Atlantic where the shipwreck occurred. He was, naturally, just heartsick over it all. But all of a sudden Mr. Spafford felt a rush of peace - "supernatural peace" - as he looked to the Lord for comfort and strength. He then picked up his pen and with tears streaming down his face, he wrote the words, "When peace like a river attendeth my way, when sorrows like sea billows roll; whatever my lot, Thou hast taught me to say, 'It is well, it is well with my soul!'"

Millions know that song - you might know of it as well, my friend. And, it may be that you have suffered a tragedy. I use the word "tragedy" as a word implying any negative thing. A tragedy comes in many forms and degrees - depending on the individual. In it and through it the words of Jesus ring clear (John 14:27)

"My peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you..."

It continues, "not as the world gives, but as I give." There is a great difference.

So, in it all God, you have taught me to say/sing, IT IS WELL WITH MY SOUL.

My prayer for you!

Lord, I ask for acceptance on the part of this friend who has pulled up this web page. In acceptance will lie their peace. May they say, "O my heart, be still" in the name of Jesus.

Amen
