Words for Courageous Living

Life's Fog

My, the fog was thick last night over on the coast of California. Nancy and I were spending the night at our son's Ken's beach house. We looked out the window and it was really thick, you know the kind that one can "cut with a knife".

Perhaps you have been in such fog. No doubt everyone at one time or another has experienced fog - depending where they live or might be traveling. However, the fog of which I write is not literal fog. Let me explain.

I once read the story of a lady by the name of Florence Chadwick. She wanted to swim the distance between Catalina Island and the coast of California. The distance is 21 miles. So on July 4, 1952 she at age 32, went into the water. This is the same lady who earlier had been the first woman to swim the English Channel in both directions!!

Well, the water was really cold that day and the FOG WAS THICK. In fact so thick it was that she could hardly see the boats that were in her party. She had been in the water for 15 hours. As I said earlier, the water was cold and it was not that she was tired, but that she was cold that she wanted to stop. Her remarks were the fog was thick. Well, her mother and her trainer tried to encourage her to continue...she was near the shore. But she could ONLY SEE THE FOG, so got out of the water.

It was then she realized that she was only a few blocks from shore. What did she say? "I'm not excusing myself, but if I could have seen the shore, I might have made it."

Florence had been licked not by fatigue, or even the cold, BUT by the fog. The fog had obscured her goal.

So now let's go back to your water of living. When one can't see, the Evil One comes in and plants his seeds of doubt and "there is no way you can do it" type of mentality. Sad thing is that one often allows themselves to be blinded by reason and are prevented from reaching a goal.

Perhaps at this very moment situations are so "foggy" that you can't see in the distance. It is at this time that the Lord whispers in your ear (1 John 1:5)

"...God is light, and in Him is no darkness at all."

So trust Him my friend when you can not see the future and all appears dark as the darkness of fog. He will not fail you. He will, in fact, encourage you!!

Prayer

I ask, Lord, that you bless this one - and especially so - if they are walking through fog. Keep their feet on the straight path and keep them strong to endure to "victory" in the name of Jesus.

Amen
