Words for Courageous Living

Life Has Tunnels

The phone rang! My wife, Nancy picked it up - I reached for the cordless extension. On the other end of the line was our son Bryan who said that his son Bryer (age 4 at the time) wanted to tell us something. What was it? His experience of his first train trip that led through a TUNNEL.

In fact after our grandson gave the phone back to his dad we got the entire story. Seems Bryan, his wife, Elaine, son Bryer and daughter, Raynee (age 2) had taken this wonderful train trip. Bryan said that he felt it important to let his family have a train experience, becauses passenger trains are being removed more and more. So they went on a short train trip.

What impressed Bryer was the tunnels. He said, "Nannie, Papa, I went through 5 tunnels." In fact that area (between San Louis Obispo and Paso Robles, California, USA) is supposed to be one of the few places where the caboose almost touches the engine due to the curved tracks along the mountain.

A TUNNEL. Have you ever felt you were in a tunnel? Have you ever felt that your life was leading you into a tunnel? Where experiences leave you in the darkness? A lot of people actually fear a tunnel experience. Take, for instance, this true story of a dear Scotch lady who wanted to go to the city of Edinburg. For years she could not be persuaded to take the train journey becauses of her fear of going through a tunnel.

But the story is that she was finally persuaded because of circumstances to take the train trip. On the train her fears were great, her agitation increased as the train sped toward the tunnel. BUT before the train got to the tunnel, the woman worn out with excitement, dropped into sleep. When she awoke she discovered that the tunnel had been passed.

Now, while it would be good to sleep through a horrible experience - so termed a "tunnel" naturally that is impossible. HOWEVER the Lord has offered us the next best thing. Matthew 11:28 and Psalm 91:1, "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest." "...rest in the shadow of the Almighty."

Take these words personally, my friend, on your life's track. You will come through it.

My prayer for you, my friend

Lord, I ask in the name of Jesus, that this one trust you and faith you through a projected tunnel, or a real dark tunnel that they are in. Give them safety and light through it as they come to you - sitting in your lap.

Amen
